Here's my idea for these two:
Gabriel is the first actor that Canter meets in the story. Although Canter already knows how to use basic magic at the start of the game, it is Gabriel who teaches him how to apply magic in a combat scenario when the two are ambushed by a pair of non-adept raiders. They work together and defeat the raiders before Gabriel takes Canter to join the Veritas Order, of which he is already an established member.
The two become fast friends in spite of their religious differences (Canter is an agnostic and Gabriel is a stalwart follower of Aes). Gabriel introduces Canter to the world of religion and Canter, in turn, shares his own philosophical perspectives with Gabriel. They ask each other many questions about the other's beliefs. Over the course of the game, Gabriel slowly loses his faith in a god, while Canter slowly gains faith in one.
